My Journey Towards a Multilingual Me
Since I was a child, I was always interested in learning new languages, exploring different cultures and trying out various cuisines. This has led me to study vast number of books and explore many sites. I even watched many different dramas and movies to satiate myself. This not only broadened my horizons but also helped me learn and improve myself in various ways. Although unfortunately I never had an experience to travel abroad yet but I feel that if I go somewhere, I can adjust well.
With Artificial Intelligence (AI) advancements, language learning has been fun as well as like a piece of cake. Earlier I used to rely on YouTube and google for learning but nowadays there is duo lingo, learna, chatgpt as well as copilot and one can use any platform to learn a language and it helps in the practice also.
These apps not only provide reading, writing, listening but speaking as well. The best part is that they are all Free. and also there is no time restriction. With a teacher, you need to observe timings and its costly. The only drawback is that some changes in pronunciation cannot be picked up by AI and you can always cheat. But if one is committed, they can learn in the comfort of their homes.
So far I have studied German till A2 level and started with learning Korean Alphabet (Hangeul) Its a fun experience as now I can understand a little bit from my favorite TV shows and if some foreign language draft is there, I can get to the crux of it.
Benefits of Learning many different languages
Being multilingual has its own benefits for adults as well as kids. The best as a parent being that my child who tries to imitate me can become multilingual as well and we would be at the same level. Also I can have a speaking partner for free who is readily available. It is also a good activity for the toddler.
Better Career Prospects
Although being a doctor, my chances are limited to be benefitted from knowing many different foreign languages, but if I want to move abroad to the country whose language I know, things would be better for me. Even if I know the basics of a language, in order to practice medicine in that country, I need to be fluent in the language and should also pass the medical exams in their language which seems impossible right now but you never know about the future?
Also learnt knowledge never goes wasted.
Personal betterment
This has been my best take so far. After getting interested in Korean, I started watching their content creators as well as dramas and I have developed a habit of taking care of my body as well as mind. My personal fitness goals have been renewed. I have started yoga and meditation and this has helped me calm my mind and healed my soul. I used to be a fan of mindfulness exercises before but now I feel even more urged whenever I lose my momentum as all my favorite stars are doing that. This has also helped my kid as well as kids love to imitate.
Better mental and physical Health
With learning new languages, one trains their brain and this helps fight anxiety and depression.
You must have heard that An empty mind is a Devil's workshop. So when there is a lot to do on your plate, its a rare occurrence that one gets time to think. Also the horizons of a multilingual person opens. I have also leant that learning a new skill or language helps prevent cognitive decline.
Better chances of enjoying travel and exploring culture
When given a chance to travel, those who know the native language enjoy and learn more than those who don't. Because culture is best understood in native language.
Better choice of content
With more languages at hand, naturally there would be more interests and a person can enjoy varied content on social media. And the best part, you don't need subtitles to understand what is happening in your favorite drama/season or movie!
Tools to Learn A new Language
Now lets look at the tools which can help us learn a new language. Before the advent of these tools, the only option we had was to find a teacher expert in languages and take physical classes. Online platforms made it easier that you could take online classes on zoom, google meet or video call on whatsapp but nowadays the advancement of AI has further made it easier. My personal recommendation is Duo lingo. I have learned German till 17 score according to CEFR that equates to A1 from it and I am still learning. It makes language learning fun.
If you want real human interaction, I would recommend taking free online courses from Coursera which helped me learn Korean as Duo Lingo was a common interface and it was very tough to learn Korean Alphabets from it. It can also help you earn certificates if you pay a fee and sometimes there is financial assistance also available.
Other than that, I have seen many people trying Chatgpt, copilot and other AI tools thought personally I haven't tried them yet because I am not a tech savvy person.
But overall learning a new language is fun and its rewarding also. I really want to go to Germany and Korea one day and talk to the natives in their own language. I always dream of that too but I don't know whether or not and when will my dream become a reality?
